Colin Maiden Park was first identified in 2012 as the Central Auckland site for two new Auckland Hockey turfs to address the existing shortage of hockey facilities and serve our sport and
community for generations to come.
Previously visioned and owned by the University of Auckland for university sports-based teams, the Park came into Auckland Council ownership in 2016. The Auckland Council Colin
Maiden Park (CMP) masterplan aims to realise an opportunity for a regionally significant sports precinct that connects community sport with high-performance programmes.
A refreshed masterplan was undertaken and included Auckland Hockey, who had last been on the site during pre-artificial turf days of 1990. Designed by Dion Gosling, former Black Stick, Auckland Rep and current Trustee of Auckland Hockey Facilities Trust (AHFT), the vision focused on the integration of hockey with the existing playing surfaces and buildings.
Auckland Hockey will manage the turfs including competition, club and school use, with AHFT the leaseholders and owners of the facility. Auckland University Hockey Clu
b will be a club partner for the facility, with many local schools, other Auckland clubs and stakeholders also benefitting from the development.
Thanks to the generous funding support of Auckland Council, Foundation North, Lottery Community Facility Fund, Grassroots Trust, Four Winds Foundation, Polytan, TTCF and Blue Waters Community Trust turf construction begun in January 2025.
The first stage of the project, turf construction is due to be completed and ready for community use by the end of February 2026.
Stage 2 is the installation of floodlights and irrigation which still requires circa $1 – $1.5 million in funding to be secured. Following stages of the project will look to include dugouts and changing rooms/toilets that compliment the exisiting network of facilities across the wider park with University Rugby, Auckland Tennis, Swimtastic, Oceania Football, Auckland Ne
tball and University Cricket amongst the current sports located within the exisiting sporting precinct.
