Sheryl Law – Life Member Hockey NZ

Sheryl Law has achieved the highest honours in Hockey, tallying close to 40 years of service to our sport in NZ.

Actively involved in the Southern Districts Hockey Club in many capacities including as a volunteer coach and administrator and all the while sharing her wealth of experience and skills for the benefit of players at all levels.

Her Southern Districts Hockey Club has achieved a quiet reputation for developing impressive players including Men’s and Women’s Black Sticks, and the dedication and commitment from Sheryl has undoubtedly helped the Club grow and flourish to where it is today, a successful partner Club in the Kolmar Multi-sport Facility.

Sheryl along with her husband Rick have been the driving force of Southern Districts Hockey Club for over 35 years. Sheryl has been instrumental in securing Kiwisport funding to enable Club-based coaching and development programmes in South Auckland schools. She has also had a strong involvement in Auckland Hockey administration as well as having been a Black Stick in 1979, 1981-82, and attending the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic games. As a side note she has managed to raise two current Vantage Black Sticks in her sons Marcus and Simon Child who have amassed over 350 caps together.

Sheryl has given a huge amount to Hockey in both Auckland and New Zealand. She is a Life Member of Auckland Hockey and her Southern Club and the Auckland Coach of the Year award is named after her. She has continued to commit many hours to volunteer groups including Hockey’s Greater Auckland Facilities Working Group, as well as having been a selector and manager of rep teams.

In 2019 Sheryl was  further honoured  at an Investiture Ceremony at Government House, receiving a Queens Service Medal for her Community Service from Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy.

Sheryl has been recognised for all of her outstanding contributions to hockey with her nomination to be a Life Member of Hockey NZ accepted at the HNZ AGM on Friday 24th April.
